Activist group occupies PCC auditorium, other attendees have mixed reactions
On Saturday, January 3, the local anti-police violence and social justice group Don't Shoot/Portland joined with 15 Now to protest at the McDonald's on SE 82nd and Powell. They called on McDonalds to pay a living wage to its workers, and more generally for a $15 and hour minimum wage city-wide. After an hour, the group marched north on 82nd, taking over two lanes of traffic and continuing their chants, "Oh Portland, Wake Up," "Hands Up, Don't Shoot," and others.
Their destination was the Portland Community College, Southeast Campus, where Senator Ron Wyden was holding one of a series of wesstern Oregon Town Halls to hear from his constituents. The group ended up taking over the auditorium, shutting the meeting down, and holding their own impromptu community meeting along with a number of people who stayed on from the interrupted Town Hall.
KBOO's Paul Roland was on the scene and has this report. Hats off to PM News and Public Affairs Director Jenka Soderberg for some superb last-minute editing help to get this piece air-ready!
