Trains, Woody, and Democracy

We live in troubled times and music can be a soothing balm as well as providing apt social commentary.

I love train songs, so the program starts with some classics performed by Portland blues greats along with some scratchy old recordings that date back to 1929.

Woody Guthrie would have had plenty to say about these times, but he’s long gone, so the next best thing is some contemporary songs about Woody.

We’ll finish with songs about these times and about Democracy, which is alarmingly slipping away here in the US.

Featured artists include Portland blues greats Curtis Salgado, Lloyd Jones, Paul DeLay, and Mary Flower, along with Mississippi John Hurt, Robert Johnson, Doc Watson & Earl Scruggs, Jimmie Rodgers, Johnny Cash, Tim Grimm, Dan Weber, the Wanderers, Ry Cooder, Flaco Jimenez, Kate Wolf, Eliza Gilkyson, Mark Graham, and Leonard Cohen.
