Join us on Saturday 7/16 10pm - midnight as the Soundbox pays respect to Bernie Worrell (April 19, 1944 – June 24, 2016). All of us music lovers of the world owe an enormous debt to Bernie.
As founding member of Parliament-Funkadelic, he defined psych-rock Hammond and Rhodes organs, and then embraced the synthesizers and created the futuristic synth funk sound. And not just the style, he created new SOUNDS on the synthesizers still used today. Bernie was the second person to receive the Moog synthesizer created by Bob Moog.
He was classically trained at Juliard, was at least 20 years ahead of his time, and created styles & genres that themselves gave birth to genres (funk, psychedelic rock & soul, techno, disco, new-wave, electro, g-funk, hip-hop). He worked with a mind-staggering number of groups, such as the dozen or so P-Funk Mobs, Talking Heads, Fela Kuti, Bill Laswell, Government Mule, Les Claypool, Prince Paul, Mos Def, really too many to mention. He stayed active from the 1960s until his death in 2016.
Saturday 10pm-12, we will be playing a cross-section slice of Bernie Worrell's music.
