Continuing the tradition...
As promised, we are continuing our tribute to the life and art of Maurice White. This man's work is so vast, it's impossible to cover in a matter of two (or even four) hours. This evening, we want to honor not only his work as a drummer (coming from a jazz background), but also as a writer/arranger and a producer for other artists. We want to highlight some of the MANY amazing Earth Wind & Fire songs that tend to not get any light- those album cuts and non-album tracks. The precision of the Phenix Horns; the soul of Larry Dunn's keys; the energy of Verdine White, Phillip Bailey's range (and skills on percussion)- every single member of that band creates this collective experience which is unforgettable. Maurice White had a vision to create a soundtrack to uplift humaity, and brought a number of people together to create something truly revolutionary- not only was it unabashedly spiritual (utilizing Africa as its center), but it was also consistently about positivity. Popular music never had such a group before, or since then. Very few groups could be as decisive in their message and bring people all over the world together, despite differences.
We are still processing Mr. White's transition; and even though we play Earth Wind & Fire on the regular on our show (we've even done dedicated shows to them prior to Mr. White's transition), we feel this month-long tribute is only proper.
