On Pastures of Plenty this week (April 30, 2025) we feature 90 minutes of the music of the late Jesse Colin Young, a prominent figure in the development of Folk-Rock. As a member of the Youngbloods, he recorded "Get Together", a tune whose message of Peace and Love would resonate with an entire generation and become the anthem of the Woodstock Nation.
Hailing from New York City, Young began his career playing the folk clubs of Greenwich Village, and released his first solo album, "Soul of a City Boy" in 1964. In 1965 He would record a second solo album, "Young Blood" which included John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful on harp. Both of these early albums would feature Young's singular approach to Blues and Ballads, including several covers of tunes from Mississippi John Hurt.
He then formed The Youngbloods, and recorded a number of albums for RCA, the most successful of which was "Elephant Mountain" in 1969. After signing with Warner Bros. in 1970, with their own imprint, Racoon Records, The Youngbloods would record several albums, while at the same time Jesse Colin Young began to record and perform as a solo artist. His first album in this arrangement was 1970's "Together", much of which is included in today's show. His most successful solo album would become "Song For Juli", which included the title song written about his daughter.
