Orca in small tank; woman petting shark

On our next program, host Michele Coppola brings you two stories you don’t want to miss. Sharks may have an (undeserved) bad reputation, but they are very much in danger: it’s estimated that as many as half a million of them will be slaughtered to make a vaccine for COVID-19. We’ll talk with Stefanie Brendl, Founder and Executive Director of Shark Allies about the effort to persuade pharmaceutical companies to use more sustainable alternatives.

We’ll also feature the heartbreaking story of Lolita, also known as Tokitae or Sk'aliCh'elh-tenautan orca who has been living in a small tank at the Miami Seaquarium for 50 years. We’ll speak with Michelle Bender, Ocean Rights Manager at the Earth Law Center about the ongoing efforts to free her to the Lummi Nation and her home waters in the Salish Sea near Bellingham, WA.
