Author and illustrator Raina Telgemeier inspires young readers with her graphic memoirs
Raina Telgemeier has become a rock star among school-age readers, with her graphic memoirs Smile and Guts and her interactive how-to book Share Your Smile. Scholastic Books launched the Graphix imprint based on Raina's comics adaptations of Ann M. Martin's Baby-Sitters Club books, and her relatable stories about childhood difficulties have even impressed grown-ups such as Atlantic editor Scott Stossel.
S.W. Conser caught up with Raina at the 2019 Portland Book Festival to find out how she's dealing with her newfound fame and the responsibilities that come with it.
