Episode 14
In this talk show the host and guest address varied topics exploring ways to create a more just and healthy community and a better world. Host Dr. Martin Donohoe is a physician-educator-activist and textbook author from the Portland Oregon area.

This and the previous episode cover the topic, Teaching Social Justice. Brazilian educator Paulo Freire wrote, “Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity OR it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world.” My guest Hyung Nam studied political philosophy, worked with "at-risk" youth in both residential and school settings, and has taught social studies since 2000. He participates in social justice teacher groups and served on the editorial board of Rethinking Schools and the steering committee for the Northwest Teaching for Social Justice Conference. We discuss how social justice can be taught, as well as the barriers to doing so. Note: episode 13 should be listened to before episode 14.
