Youth are safe in schools, right? We'd like to think so. The truth is safety in school depends on many factors. Often, LGBTQ youth face verbal harrassment, sometimes daily. Some LGBTQ youth face violence in school. The Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network's (GLSEN) 2007 National School Climate Survey found some frightening statistics. Please read their research report to understand what's really going on inside of our schools.

Tonight we speak with Zena, who works with the Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition. We discuss what's going on in Oregon schools, Oregon's new anti-bully law, and work that the Oregon Safe Schools Coalition around the state.

We also talk with Jenn Burleton, Executive Director for TransActive. Jenn discusses the trans youth perspective, including violence in schools. We also cover Larry King's murder in his middle school classroom.

Events announced on this show include SMYRC's grand re-opening, and the movie Straightlaced, in its Portland premiere, benefiting the Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition. TransActive is having a fundraiser this Sunday 10/11 at Sydney's Cafe, located at NW 15th & NW Thurman from 2 to 3:30pm
