The carriage horse business is animal cruelty disguised as romance.

Carriage horses are portrayed in film as a romantic ride for two.  But the reality is far less romantic and steeped in suffering for the horses who often are burdened with heavy loads in extreme weather conditions for 12 hour stretches. In this episode of Voices for the Animals, host Courtney Scott interviews Jodie Wiederkehr, Campaign Director of the Chicago Alliance for Animals (CAA) and Founder of the Partnership to Ban Horse Carriages Worldwide.  Jodie has been working for animal causes since 1997 and among her other achievements, was the Campaign Director on the successful ballot initiative to end greyhound racing in Massachusetts.

Jodie has been monitoring the horse drawn carriage trade in Chicago to see if the companies and drivers are following the laws set by the city of Chicago.  The city's horse carriage companies have racked up a large number of infractions due in large part to her efforts. Her ultimate goal is to ban horse carriages in Chicago.  Is it the end of the ride for horse driven carriages in the windy city and beyond? Tune in and hear how Jodie and CAA are making headway to rein in this exploitative business.
