Host Ken Jones talks with Curtis White, author of the new novel Lacking Character, published by Melville House.

Curtis has published seven earlier books of fiction, including Memories of My Father Watching TV and Requiem. His nonfiction includes The Middle Mind: Why Americans Don't Think for Themselves, The Science Delusion: Asking the Big Questions in a Culture of Easy Answers, and We, Robots: Staying Human in the Age of Big Data. Curtis’s essays have appeared in Harper’s, the Village Voice, Orion, Salon, Tricycle, and Playboy magazine.

Paul Auster calls Curtis “a master of bewitchments, parodies, and dazzling tropes.” And the late graphic novelist Harvey Pekar said Curtis’s work “has a surrealistic, hallucinatory quality. More specifically, it’s absurdist in the tradition of William Burroughs, Joseph Heller, and Terry Southern.” That’s pretty impressive company.
