SAVING THE PLANET WITH AGROECOLOGY

Bill Resnick talks with Eric Holt-Gimenez, director of Food First/The Institute for Food and Development Policy. He has taught at the University of California in Berkeley and Santa Cruz, and conducted graduate courses in food justice, food sovereignty, and agroecology all over the world. In his early years, indeed 20 years, he worked as an agroecologist with farmer’s movements in Central America and Mexico. He writes and organizes including the book Land Justice: Reimagining Land, Food and the Commons in the United States.

His latest book is  A Foodies Guide to Capitalism; Understanding the Political Economy of What We Eat. It will become available to KBOO listeners in our next membership drive later this month, when we do the second part of this interview on ending hunger, producing nutritious food, and becoming net zero in greenhouse gas emissions. This requires replacing the current industrial capitalist system with what’s called agroecology.  Today we will discuss the vast damage that industrial agriculture is doing to us and to the planet, focus on the greenwashing they are doing, and then introduce you to agroecology.
