I Love You Because

 

Leon Roger Payne was born in Texas in 1917 and was almost totally blind from infancy. When Leon was twelve, his mother tucked a little black pig under her arm and walked four miles through a cotton patch to the neighbors' farm. When she came back the pig was not with her. Instead she carried a battered old case. Inside the case was a guitar for Leon. Leon went on to write such classic songs as 'Lost Highway' and 'Things Have Gone To Pieces', which were hits for Hank Williams and George Jones respectively. Leon had a hit with his song 'I Love You Because.' but was never able to build on that commercial success. He continued record and perform until the late Sixties. Tune in Saturday as we celebrate the music of the blind balladeer.
