Resistance and Struggle-Climate Change, Socially Responsible Investing, Labor Movements and Anti-Commercialism

Denise Morris hosts this episode of the Old Mole which includes

  • Bill Resnick talks with Independent journalist and climate and global sustainability activist Patrick Mazza. They discuss how many big cities in this country can defy Trumpism, and show how to radically cut greenhouse gas emissions in less than 10 years. The resistance to Donald Trump, must be led by blue cities and states who could check the emperors climate policies, and pioneer and model policies that curb climate change to manageable levels and save the planet. Discussion will also address how Portland could join these cities if it is forced by local movements to commit to stopping climate change. Patrick Mazza’s blog is Cascadia Planet, and last month he wrote a piece on the importance of transforming our local communities, where we live.
  • Teacher and Activist  Hyung Nam joins the old Mole to discuss the Socially Responsible Investments Committee. Founded by the Portland City Council in December 2014, the SRI Committee is advisory to Council and charged with recommending corporate issuers for inclusion on, or removal from, the City's Corporate Securities Do-Not-Buy List in the City's direct investment in corporate securities. Next meeting is Monday, December 19, 2016 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Portland Building, Room C, 2nd Floor for Public Comment on Apple, Intel, Microsoft. https://www.portlandoregon.gov/omf/67101.
  • Joe Clement and special guest Dennis Gravy review the classic Christmas-time cartoon, A Charlie Brown Christmas. They consider anti-commercialism, alienation, cultural appropriation, white supremacy, and why the "workers revolution" that seems to promise an answer to Charlie Brown's problems falls flat. Dennis Gravy is a member of the Industrial Workers of the World and the Marilyn Buck Abolitionist Collective. -
  • Denise Morris talks with Stephanie Luce about Donald Trumps selection of Fast Food CEO Andrew Puzder for Labor Secretary. Stephanie Luce is an Associate Professor at the Murphy Institute, City University of New York. She is the author of Fighting for a Living Wage. Her book Labor Movements: Global perspectives was published in 2014. In 2010 Andrew Puzder along with Professor of Entrepreneurial Finance, David Newton co authored the ebook entitled Job Creation: How It Really Works and Why Government Doesn’t Understand It. But the enemies of minimum wage and worker protections will not go unchallenged. Denise and Stephanie look at the current fight for 15 and a Union and new opportunities to re/build the labor movement.
