Current Immigration Policies and the Injustices They Inflict on the Entire Community

 

Hosts Celeste Carey and Cecil Prescod speak with Patricia Rumer and Marco Mejia from the Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice, a coalition of individuals, faith leaders and diverse faith communities called by conscience to respond actively and publicly to the suffering of their immigrant brothers and sisters in the U.S. They work through advocacy and outreach to educate the community about the injustices current immigration policies inflict on the entire community. They provide opportunities to take action for change and provide welcome and accompaniment to people facing persecution and oppression and offer Sanctuary for immigrants faced with family separation. 

Patricia Rumer: Pat has been involved first with Oregon New Sanctuary movement and now Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice for the past 10 years and is a member of Sanctuary congregation, Ainsworth United Church of Christ. She is was a Sanctuary volunteer with Francisco Aguirre and family, spent five months doing immigrant work in Tucson, AZ, and has been a visitor to Detention Center detainees while working at a Transition shelter for women and children. She also worked with the Samaritans, placing water in the desert, and at the Comedor at the border forpeople waiting to cross or recently deported. She also serves as support for "immigrant" youth who age out of process. 

Marco Mejia: Originally from Ecuador, Marco has been contributing to the growth, empowerment and success of a number of different non-profit and grassroots organizations, social movements and diverse communities in the struggles for equality, social, political and economic justice. Committed to working on efforts to promote change, improve the quality of life of individuals, families, and communities especially around racial, social, immigrant and worker justice. Marco has been a long time social justice activist, popular educator, community organizer and coalition builder.
