Karen James interviews Laura Speer, associate director for Policy Reform Advocacy at the Annie E Casey Foundation, the nation’s leading organization for the overall well-being of children. Over 5 million children nationwide have had an incarcerated parent. The loss of a parent through incarceration can have lasting effects on a child’s development and well-being. In April 2016 the Annie E. Casey Foundation released a report A Shared Sentence: The Devastating Toll of Parental Incarceration on Kids, Families and Communities. Laura discusses this report which proposes recommendations for state and local policymakers to help kids nationwide who struggle as a result of having an incarcerated parent.
