Original versions (& GD covers) of songs written and/or first recorded by black artists.

The third installment of an irregular series of programs featuring The Grateful Dead covering songs written or first recorded by black artists (originally produced for 2012 Black History Month special).

The original artists include highly recognizable musicians like Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins, Muddy Waters and Otis Redding and songs like Dancing in the Street, Good Lovin', Johnny B. Goode, In the Midnight Hour and Turn on Your Lovelight. But there's also Lemme B. Good, Noah Lewis, James 'Sugar Boy' Crawford and Blind Lemon Jefferson.

Part 1 (Feb '12)                     Part 2 (Mar '12)

The Dead played some of these songs in this special just once, others hundreds of times. I hope you'll hear and learn something new by listening to these shows - I sure did.

All installments of this special will feature the original version of these songs followed by a representative cover version by the Grateful Dead (sometimes more than one - listen to find out why).

Quick playlist (Aug '12)

In the Midnight Hour, On the Road Again, Devil with a Blue Dress, Good Golly Miss Molly, Ain't It Crazy, Are You Lonely For Me, I'm A Hog For You Baby, New Orleans, Searchin', Death Don't Have No Mercy, Man Smart, Women Smarter, Around and Around
