Question: What determines the gender of honey bees and many (most?) other insects?

Answer: In one word, sperm! If the queen releases sperm along with an egg, the egg is considered fertilized and it will be female (worker) bee. If no sperm is released, it is an UNfertilized egg and will therefore be a male bee (drone).
