The Oregon Legislature’s Joint Committee on Addiction and Community Safety Response has held hearings recently on deflection programs, which have been put into operation to varying degrees in counties around the state in response to House Bill 4002, the measure that passed last session and repealed the decriminalization of simple possession of small amounts of some drugs which had been part of Measure 110.
On Friday March 7, the Committee held an informational hearing on deflection programs. This hearing was a special event held not at the Capitol building but at the Salem Convention Center as part of the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission Summit.
On this week’s Prison Pipeline we listen in on testimony from two of the witnesses: Christopher Campbell, PhD, an Associate Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Portland State University and Director of the Criminal Justice Policy Research Institute at PSU; and Kenneth Sanchagrin, PhD, Executive Director of the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission.
