On Pastures of Plenty this week (September 25, 2024) we feature 90 minutes of Dobro music by some of the most talented players of this beautiful, lyrical, and haunting instrument.
The late Josh Graves is somewhat the godfather of the Dobro, the trade name the resonator guitar commonly goes by. He joined Flatt & Scruggs Foggy Mountain Boys in 1955, and played with them for 15 years, later spending time in Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass and the Earl Scruggs Revue.
The late Mike Auldridge was a founding member of Seldom Scene, whom he played with for 21 years. He also had a prolific career as a studio musician, backing everyone from Patty Loveless to Dolly Parton.
Rob Ickes was a founding member of Blue Highway, and played with them for over 20 years. He won the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Dobro Player of the Year award for a record-setting fifteenth time in 2013.
Dobro master and 16-time GRAMMY winner Jerry Douglas is to the resonator guitar what Jimi Hendrix was to the electric guitar, elevating, transforming, and reinventing the instrument in countless ways. Band leader for The Jerry Douglas Band and his GRAMMY winning bluegrass band The Earls of Leicester, as well as a member of groundbreaking ensembles including Alison Krauss & Union Station, J.D. Crowe & the New South, The Country Gentlemen, Boone Creek, and Strength In Numbers, Douglas is considered the best resophonic player in the world.
