Walt and Dusty

Talking Earth host Walt Curtis passed away last August 25th.  Tonight we air one of his best shows during the pandemic, recorded on Walt Curtis' porch with musician Dusty Santamaria and board-op Patrick Bocarde back in August 2020.  Topics include life in New Orleans, voudoun and life under quarantine.  Dusty also plays several songs from his then new album.  Dusty Santamaria moved to New Orleans from Portland several years ago.  He released two albums while in Portland: Existential Detective Rock n Roll, and Now That I've Stopped Killing… You can find out more at the website

Walt Curtis' accomplishments are so many, I will miss some; I shall still attempt to list them here.  The author of Mala Noche, a novella which turned into Gus Van Sant's first film, as well numerous books of poetry, including The Erotic Flying Machine, Peckerneck Country, Rhymes for Alice Bluelight and Salmon Songs, as well I wouldn't be able to mention on air.  He also was in several seminal Portland films, including Mala Noche and Penny Allen's Property and Paydirt, and also Sabrina Guitart's Salmon Poet.  He began hosting Talking Earth in 1971.  He will be missed by me, KBOO, Portland, and all over the rest of the world.  Rest in peace Walt.
