Youth Collective Report: June - Dec, 2008

Hello listeners and members, we’ve wrapped up another successful year with KBOO's Youth Collective. We’ve reached a new level of stability within the group and with new community partners, with exciting plans on the horizon.

In 2009 we saw an increase in the average age of the KBOO Youth, and now the Collective is majority teenagers. In the recent past we had a group that consisted of youth who were 19 and 20, and many who were 11 and 12.

Also within the station we have had a fair amount of school and community groups visit. In the past six months we have hosted youth from Human Solutions, a residential home outside Beaverton, youth from Helensview High School on 86th and Sumner, youth from The Pangaea Project, and youth from the Centennial Learning Center, where we did our Global Youth Service Day project last April. One of the exciting facts about the CLC youth is that Callie Dean, a “Graduate” of the KBOO Youth Collective, arranged the recording. She dropped out of CLC a few years ago, but pursued working with an old teacher to get kids to come to KBOO and participate in radio.

In my work doing outreach, going into the community to bring the tools of radio to those who can’t make it into KBOO, we have made some exciting new friends. We have an exciting new partnership with NAYA, the Native American Youth Association, which began in November. We participated again at the annual Oregon Peacemakers conference and are also working on a more intensive and long-term partnership with teenage girls from Resolutions NW.

Among our tabling events during the past 6 months were two events planned by and for youth that stood out. The Youth Empower Youth Fest took place in September and in December, the Re:Mediation group at Trillium Charter hosted a forum on Depleted Uranium.

All the excitement was not left in 2008, though! The first weekend of April Portland again hosts the National Federation of Community Broadcasters Conference. We will be hosting a special radio show to be broadcast on April 3rd with youth attendees to the Conference.

With all the work that we do, sometimes it’s hard to remember to appreciate those make our jobs easy, and I would like to thank the KBOO Staff for the support and encouragement they give to the KBOO Youth Collective. We appreciate that support, and the support of the KBOO Membership. Thank you for your financial sponsorship, and support of our mission. We could not do it without you.
