This is a press release from the Clinton Street Theater, and a good event for KBOO listeners.
Distant Interiors: Three Works by Kamal Aljafari
Beyond Borders Program VII: Palestine | Pan Asian Series
Supported in part by a grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council
JUNE 15 + 16 [6:45PM]
Cinema Project @ Clinton Street Theatre | 2552 SE Clinton St.
Cinema Project's Pan Asian series of visiting artists is rounded out this season with Palestinian-born independent filmmaker Kamal Aljafari. Through his personal documentary style, Aljafari examines varying definitions of home and place in the Middle East. His 2009 feature Port of Memory, shot in Jaffa, captures the essence of being Palestinian in Israel, as well as being under occupation in the West Bank and Gaza. Prior to Israel's War of Independence in 1948, Jaffa was considered to be a thriving urban and economic port city in Palestine. Focusing on his family and Palestinian community that remains in contemporary Jaffa, Aljafariís work reveals, through thoughtful compositions the strained and complicated layers of history that construct (physically and psychologically) such internationally sensitive places.
Aljafari will be in attendance to introduce and discuss his work. Please join us for this exciting event.
